The Malden High School Crew Team began in 2006 as a fledgling group of 12 students who rowed along the banks of the Malden River. Under the guidance of Head Coach Sarah Jones and Coach Shauna Campbell, and assisted through its partnership with the Gentle Giant Rowing Club, the team has grown significantly and now serves nearly 100 students.
Due to the high costs associated with the sport, the MHS Crew Team receives limited financial support from Malden High School. Therefore, the students are expected to participate in team fundraising to assist in covering season costs. In its early stages, the livelihood of the team depended exclusively on parental donations and coach support.
During the 2012 rowing season, the parents involved in keeping the team functioning realized the need for organized and consistent financial support. In response to the team’s growing needs, Malden Rowing Foundation, Inc. (MRFI) filed articles of incorporation as a non-profit organization with the Secretary of the Commonwealth on February 13, 2013.
By providing financial support, MRFI has helped in promoting the MHS Crew Team to compete as part of the Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association (MPSRA) and as a spring varsity sport. MRFI is now expanding beyond the MHS Crew team to serve the greater Malden community.
